Gary Jager, a former member of the First Children’s Finance Board of Directors, thought he had retired, but when the call came from Jerry Cutts in the Fall of 2009, Gary accepted. He is now the chief financial officer for First Children’s Finance, responsible for finance, operational planning and budgeting. Prior to joining First Children’s, Jager had a successful career at Travelers (formerly The St. Paul Companies) starting as a cash flow analyst in 1974 and rising to chief financial officer – Financial, Professional and International Insurance in 2006. According to Jager, “I really value what First Children’s does. As a board member I have seen the impact we have, and this is something I can feel good about when I come to work every day.” Jager’s priorities are to build a financial system that can handle the multi-state expansion. “I want to set it up so we can look at First Children’s from any angle – by state, by program, by funder or region,” said Jager. An effective strategic planning model is also a goal for Jager. When asked why he originally joined the board of First Children’s, Jager commented, “First Children’s Finance is on the cutting edge of thinking about child care. The connection between early brain development and successful kids is not widely known by most people. They still have an old view of child care – feeding them, changing diapers and making sure they have toys. For First Children’s it’s about education and high quality experiences.”
