February 2026 Vermont Newsletter

If January is the time of new beginnings and resolutions, then February is the resting place for good intentions. Whatever you hoped to do to change your world, 31 days of bringing your best self is exhausting, especially when the only person you are accountable to is you.

I’ve been thinking a lot about governance and leadership this past month and their importance in helping us stick with those resolutions. We’ve worked on goal setting for 2026 at FCF, and I think the most important thing I can do as a leader is to help my team set goals that they want to achieve and then -- not to nag them or ignore them -- but to look for time, resources and opportunities that could help them achieve those goals.

Let’s face it though, when you are the leader and no one is holding you accountable, it’s easy to abandon your resolutions at the first (or second or third) roadblock. It can feel lonely and exhausting to fight for something that is no one else’s priority. That’s why I am so pleased that my team is bringing in experts to lead workshops like Leadership Learning and Hiring Done Well, and a course in Child Care Business Administration. And we are here for you if you want someone to help you focus on your goals, whether that’s strategic planning, cash flow management or making time for yourself.

Your goals for 2026 matter, and leadership and good governance matter. I’m happy to walk through the dark days of February with you so we can get to spring together.

Need Access to Capital?

Our first round of Make Way for Kids Infant/Toddler Capacity grant projects is under way, and we are excited to announce our second-round grantees in the coming weeks.

If you need more flexible capital than the Infant/Toddler grants, there are loan funds available. The FCF Loan Fund is a national nonprofit Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI). We provide innovative, flexible loans and comprehensive business assistance to child care entrepreneurs; both child care centers and family child care homes.

The Vermont Community Loan Fund is another great resource to help your business grow. See more about VCLF and how it can support you:
